It’s hard to believe that I have been selling books for over 30 years. I never really planned on selling books or collectibles, but it slowly became apparent that I needed something to finance my hobbies. These were, of course, The Man From U.N.C.L.E. Fan club and attending Science Fiction / Media conventions.
My long time friend, Pat Feldman, and I used to frequent the local used book stores in the Chicagoland area back in the late 1970's until the mid 1980's. She was looking for books to complete her collections, and I was looking for books to sell to other fans. We would plan our day so we could hit as many shops as possible on a Saturday afternoon. Ah, those were the days.
We also attended quite a few conventions together over the years up through the 1990's. Sometimes I would be selling books, and other times I used the trips to discover more used bookstores in other towns and states. And so it went until I finally got connected to the internet in 1996. This opened up a new way of selling without having to wait for catalogs to reach potential buyers. We could now converse through email, with the next big leap being eBay.
The early days on eBay helped deplete my stock of tv & movie related books and I slowly started adding other types of books. My favorites being military history and cookbooks (love to look at them, I’m just not a great cook). And now the rest is history. I’m still selling some things on eBay, I’ve opened my shop on eCrater, and I’m also starting to list items on Listia. Who knows where I’ll be selling books next.
